Otaniemi offers an inspiring dynamic innovation ecosystem for its 16,000 students and 16,000 technology oriented professionals, with 60 to 80 new hi-tech start-up companies founded and over 500 new business ideas invented each year.

Product design is one areas of innovation in Otaniemi taking place through Aalto University's Design Factory as well as through the ME310 Program run between Stanford University (USA) and Aalto.
A second area of innovation is security and safety as Otaniemi is a test bed for projects run with North American and European Union partners. Third area of innovation is pharma and healthcare ICT and includes topics such as biomarkers for disease diagnostics (such as Alzerheimers), tools for disease profiling, mHealth, datamining and medical imaging.
Fourth area of innovation is mobile and wireless that includes augmented reality, gaming, media technologies and computational platforms. The fifth area of innovation involves electronics and deals with nanotechnologies, microsystems, new materials, printed intelligence and sensors.
Energy is the sixth area of innovation and addresses topics such as fuel cells, wind power, bio-energy, nuclear monitoring and water-intensive industries.
