Aalto University
Aalto – an internationally unique concept
Established in 2010, the Aalto University is a new university with centuries of experience. The Aalto University was created from the merger of three Finnish universities: The Helsinki School of Economics, Helsinki University of Technology and The University of Art and Design Helsinki. Aalto University School of Science and Technology has been divided into four new schools starting from 1st of January 2011. The six schools of Aalto University are all leading and renowned institutions in their respective fields and in their own right.
The combination of six schools opens up new possibilities for strong multi-disciplinary education and research. The new university's ambitious goal is to be one of the leading institutions in the world in terms of research and education in its own specialized disciplines.
An attractive environment for learning and research
The Aalto University is strongly future-oriented while, at the same time, building on the combined 300-year-history of three highly regarded universities. Only the best students and researchers are admitted to study and conduct research at the Aalto University.
A student-centered culture that encourages people to passionately learn new things will be fostered at Aalto University. The new university will provide high-quality research and education and create an internationally attractive environment for learning and research.
The Aalto University will focus its research on major global issues. New research environments often evolve into larger research programs or units through themes that require a cross-disciplinary approach.
Aalto University's Research
A University of Excellence in Education and Research
Research at Aalto
The strength of Aalto University research is based on the collaboration and individual areas of expertise of the six leading schools in their respective fields, the School of Economics, the School of Art and Design, and the four Schools of Technology: School of Engineering, School of Chemical Technology, School of Science, School of Electrical Engineering. A solid expertise in economics, arts and design and technology allows the University to carry out world-class multidisciplinary research in active cooperation with the surrounding society.
The University activities are based on long-term basic research and artistic activities as well as on high-quality teaching. Aalto University wants to enhance its expertise in all its areas of specialization and eventually rank among the top universities in the world.
In both research and artistic activities, Aalto University invests in its current strong points as well as in new combinations of the different areas of expertise of its schools. The University wants to realize the full potential of its multidisciplinary profile and to tackle pressing global issues through fresh ways of cooperation.
Research focus areasThe most important focus areas of research at Aalto University are computational science and modeling, materials research, design, and ICT and media. |
Research organizationAalto University carries out research on three campuses, 36 departments and several separate research institutes. |
FactoriesThe Design Factory, the Media Factory and the Service Factory are platforms combining the expertise of the different Aalto University schools. |
Research assessmentThe international research assessment exercise of Aalto University was carried out in 2009, on the brink of the launch of the new University.

Micronova - Centre for Micro and Nanotchnology
Micronova interior
Micronova, is a unique center for the design, development and fabrication of micro- and nanosystems. Micronova is also an official National Research Infrastructure since 2008.
Micronova is jointly run by the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Aalto University.
Our mission is to develop innovative, enabling technologies, and by working closely with industry use these new possibilities in practical and commercial applications and systems.
Our expert areas of applications include sensors based on microelectromechanical systems (MEMS), optical and wireless sensors, wireless communications and photonics systems, biosensors and fluidistics, nano and quantum devices, and millimeter wave and optical instruments for space applications.
Micronova's modern facilities, completed in 2002, include 2600 m2 of cleanrooms and processing lines for silicon BiCMOS, MEMS, III-V optoelectronics and thin film devices. In addition, Micronova houses extensive laboratories for electrical and optical measurements and various types of materials characterisation.
About 360 researcher work at Micronova from VTT, Aalto University School of Science and Technology, and from several companies. Micronova contains all parts of the micro-nano innovation chain, from developing basic research and technologies to prototype development, and small scale manufacturing. Most of our R&D is done in close cooperation with our partners at universities, research institutes and companies both in and outside Finland. Our services and facilities are flexibly available to users from outside the centre.
Furthermore, teaching is an integral and important part of Micronova's activities. Courses in micro- technology, nanotechnology and photonics are offered for both undergraduate and graduate students.
Micronova is located in the Otaniemi Technology Campus in the City of Espoo, Finland. With over 5000 researchers, Otaniemi is one of the leading Technology Parks in Europe, and the home of the two leading technical research and education organisations in Finland, VTT and TKK. In addition, several other research centres and 170 high-tech companies are located in Otaniemi.
