Otaniemi is home to NOKIA 's global headquarters. In addition, Otaniemi and its vicinity are home to a number of mid-size and large Finnnish-based companies.  Some of these companies include: 

KONE is a global leader in the elevator and escalator industry. Kone's markets are residential buildings, hotels, office and retail buildings, infrastructure and medical buildings and special buildings (such as leisure and educational centers, industrial properties and ships). Key Figures: net sales of 5 billion euros, employed 33,800 personnel in 1,000 offices around the world. KONE has eight global production units, seven global R&D centers and operates in 60 countries.

ORION is a European R&D-based pharmaceuticals and diagnostic company. Orion develops manufactures and markets human and veterinary pharmaceuticals, active pharmaceutical ingredients and diagnostic test. Key Figures: net sales of 850 million euros, employed 3,130 professionals (600 of them in R&D) in 2010. R&D focus: central nervous system (medical treatment for neurology and psychiatry); critical care and onconology (medicines for cancer treatment and for use in critical care); easy-enhaler products (medicines for asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease).

HUHTAMAKi  is a global manufacturer of consumer and specialty packaging with focus on molded fiber packing, flexible packaging, release films and paper cup manufacture. Key Figures: net sales of 2 billion euros, employed 12,000 people,  operated in 31 countries and had 52 manufacturing units worlwide (2010 data)

NESTE OIL is a refining and marketing company with production focus on premium-quality, lower-emission traffic fuels. Company produces a comprehensive range of petroleum products and is the world's leading supplier of renewable diesel. Key Figures : net sales of 11.9 billion euros, employed 5,000 persons (2010 data). R&D focus: new raw materials, products and technologies with smaller environmental footprint, services for oil and gas industry.

FORTUM is a company with activities cover generation, distribution and sales of electricity and heat. Operations focus are the Nordic countries, Russian and Baltic Rim area. Key Figures: sales of 6.3 billion euros and employed 10,585 persons (2010 data).

KEMIRA is awater chemistry company servicing customers in water-intensive industries. Services include water quality and quantitive management that improves customers' energy, water, raw material and energy efficiency. Main market segments are oil and mining, pulp and paper, municipal and industrial. Key Figures: sales of 2 billion euros, employed 4,935 personnel operating in 100 sites accross 40 countries. R&D focus: Kemira and VTT Technical Research Center of Finland (HQ in Otaniemi) established in 2010 a Center of Water Efficiency Excellence. Kemira has four global R&D centers including one in Espoo.

TIETO is a leading IT service company in providins IT and product engineering services in Northern Europe, Russia and Poland. Three main customer sectors including telecom and media, finance and industry (automotive, energy, forest, healthcare, manufacturing, logistics, public sector and retail). Key Figures: net sales of 1.7 billion euros and employed 17,770 professionals.

TEKLA a software engineering company specializing in model-based software products for the building, construction and infrastructure management industries. Key Figures: net sales of 58 million, employed 500 people and customers in 100 countries.

M-REAL a primary fibre paper producer globally and major paper supplier in Europe. Business areas are consumer packaging, office papers, specialty papers and market pulp and energy. Key Figures: sales of 2.6 billion euros, employed 4,500 people, and 13 production units in five countries.

FINNFOREST   creates a wood-related products for consumers and industry. Key Figures: revenues of 902 million euros, employed 3,000 professionals and operating in 30 countries (2010 data). R&D focus: technologies to improve wood products including 3D, x-rays, camera grading and special drying of timber moisture. 

TALVIVAARA is a base metals producer with primary focus on nickel and zinc (one of the largest known sulphide nickel resources in Europe). Key Figues: net sales of 152 million euros. R&D focus: bioheapleaching technology to enable cost effective development and explotation of resources.

OUTOKUMPU is a producer of stainless steel for a wide range of industries worlwide including builduing and construction, transportation, petrochemical and energy, catering and appliances, process and resources. Key figures : sales of 4.2 billion euros, employed 8,000 people and operated in 30 countries (2010 data).

OUTOTEC is a global provider of process solutions, technologies and services for the mining and metallurgical industries. Key Figures: sales of 969 million euros and employed 3,130 personnel (2010 data). R&D focus: increase the competitiveness of metal production processes.

NOKIA SIEMENS NETWORKS a leader and enabler of telecommunications services with a complete portfolio of mobile, fixed and converged technology, professional services (consultancy, systems integration, deployment, maintenance and managed services).  Customers include over 600 communication service providers in 150 countries.
