Research at Aalto University

Research at Aalto University takes place through 36 departments and several separate institutes.

The four research focus areas include computation and modelling, materials research, design, ICT and media.

In computation and modelling, the research explores areas such as theoretical modelling, nanosciences, genetic regualtions and telecommunications systems.

In materials research, areas include nanotechnology, microfabrication, biomaterials and advanced functional materials.

Design focuses in usability, user-centered design, user experiences, domestication of design and interaction of design research with other disciplines.

ICT research examines topics such as mathematical methods for computation, modelling of electromagnetic fields, applications in ICT and information management, and digitalization of social media among others.

Aalto University has created platforms to combine the expertise of different schools in the fields of product development, media and services. These platforms are the Design Factory, the Media Factory and the Service Factory.
